Sedation Dentistry in North York

What Sedation Dentistry Can Help With

Sedation or “sleep dentistry” is a branch of oral healthcare focusing on looking after patients’ well-being while their teeth and gums are being cleaned, repaired, or enhanced. Special medication that indues feelings of pleasantness and numbness is provided and can help you have a positive experience at the dentist.

You must consult a professional before proceeding with this method since not everyone is a suitable candidate. If any of the following applies to you, then you may be approved for this treatment:

  • Have special needs
  • Feel claustrophobic in the dentist’s chair
  • An overactive gag reflex
  • Phobia of the dentist
  • Require a complex/lengthy procedure

Types of Sedation Offered

There are a few different ways that dental sedation can be administered; this also impacts the degree of sedation provided. Two of the most common methods are:

  1. Nitrous Oxide – Frequently referred to by its colloquial term “laughing gas”, patients are given the medication via a mask that covers their nose. The effect takes place almost immediately. You’ll remain awake and be able to respond to inquiries from your dentist if needed. The medication wears off quickly, so you can get back home soon after your appointment.
  2. Oral – The medication is given to you in the form of a tiny pill which needs to be taken several hours before your procedure. The effects are moderate compared to nitrous oxide, meaning you’ll feel woozy; you may even end up nodding off before your session ends. Since it takes a while for the medication to leave your system, it’s recommended that you have someone take you to and from the clinic.

Depending on the situation, dentists may also provide general anesthesia, but they must possess the correct qualifications and have completed training. An anesthesiologist can be brought in to assist as well. You will be completely asleep and have no memory of your appointment. This is the highest level of sedation.
